Don't be a victim of a COVID-19 air purifier / air filtration scam
March 28, 2020:
Some businesses are preying on peoples' fears and advertising expensive air purifier or air filtration equipment (installed on your heating / cooling system) that will "capture, remove, or destroy Corona virus" in your indoor air. These purifiers / filters will not prevent you from becoming sick from the COVID-19 virus (aka Novel Corona Virus 2019; 2019-nCoV; SARS-CoV2).
COVID-19 acute respiratory syndrome is spread by exposure to droplets that contain the virus. When someone with the virus talks, coughs, or sneezes, they expel a spray of very small droplets of saliva and/or mucous that contain the virus. These droplets very quickly (seconds or a very few minutes) settle out of the air and onto nearby surfaces.
You catch the disease from someone by either:
touching a contaminated surface and then transferring the virus to your nose, mouth or eyes with your fingers, or,
inhaling the expelled droplets, or having them settle onto your face near your nose, mouth or eyes.
There is very little virus freely floating in indoor air. Thus, there is no reason to install filtration or purification equipment to remove something that's not even there.
While a good air purification / filtration system can be beneficial to the overall quality of indoor air, this type of equipment will do almost nothing to prevent you and your family from contracting the COVID-19 respiratory disease. Don't fall victim to this scam.
The only way to protect yourself from COVID-19 is to practice social distancing, wash your hands frequently, avoid touching your face, and wear protective equipment (mask, gloves, and/or eye protection) where appropriate.
